Barrett's shop, St Neots, in 1889

This painting of the shop was painted by Peter Huckle. His father Charles Huckle had started work at the shop in 1889 at the age of 12 years. The shop had been opened by Arthur E. Barrett in 1888, a clothier and outfitter from Gloucestershire. Arthur died at the young age of 27 years in 1893 and his widow Kitty continued to run the business with the help of young Charles. In 1907 Charles Huckle married Kitty Barrett, the widowed owner of the shop and after her death in 1908 he inherited the business.
