Horse Sunday in St Neots, 19th September 1953, standing in the Market Square
Horse Sunday was an annual event (now seldom observed) at which all local riders would assemble on St Neots Common and then proceed to the Market Square where a Vicar or Minister would conduct a short service and bless the equines and riders. This picture shows the group standing in the Market Square in front of the Paines Brewery building – from left to right are Susan Bartlett, Carol Hoefkens and Miss Hodge, who taught riding and jumping, and lived at Crosshall Lodge, 108 Crosshall Road. Miss Hodge usually rode sidesaddle when hunting and with all the clothing gear of the occasion too. Photographer was George Page.
