Richard Drakes, owner of Drakes Garage in Eaton Ford in the early 1960s
Richard Bruce Drakes (‘Bruce’) was born on 4.2.1912, the son of Frank Drakes, a butcher, and Emily Kate Crossley (‘Daisy’). About 1903, Frank emigrated to Canada to work as a cowboy, but then returned to England and married in 1910. Frank came from a wealthy farming family at Ludford, Lincs., and he bought Gunthorpe Hall in Notts., with his share of his deceased father’s estate, as their family home shortly after Richard was born. After World War I, the whole family emigrated to Quebec, Canada, where Richard spent much of his youth with his parents and two sisters, though he was sent to a Kent boarding school, near where his maternal grandfather lived, for some of this period. Richard owned a garage and petrol filling station in Eaton Ford for a few years in the early 1960s before moving elsewhere. The garage later became the Holdaway Garage but the site, opposite the Health Centre is now housing.
